As the final round of the 2002-2003 Yamaha WaveDay season, the weekend's South Australian round of the series turned out to be a cracker, with near perfect weather conditions, a record roll-up, and a good time had by all.
Thirty-three craft took to the water at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge, for the popular WaveDay series format of Slaloms, Short circuit Playzones and Tour rides.
"It was a really great note to end the series on," said Yamaha's National Sales And Marketing Manager for Watercraft, Marty Kypr, "everyone was champing at the bit to get into the action."
The fastest time of the day on the S1 course came, somewhat surprisingly, from a standup, with Mark Ruta postiing a 22.91 in qualifying for the Top 10 shootout on an SJ700.
Unfortunately for Ruta, he wasn't able to duplicate the time in the Shootout, which went to GP1200R-mounted Daniel Bennet with a time of 23.43.
"It was also a good day for both family and female entrants," said Kypr, with Melissa Edlington (GP1200R) knocking an amazing ten seconds from her times over four runs, to trim down from 44.81 to 34.25 and win the class."
Melissa also won the lucky door prize of a Jet Pilot wetsuit, while Adrian Jewaskiewikz won the 12 litres of Yamalube TCW3 marine oil.
"On such a successful day," said Kypr, "I'd also like to thank our supporting dealers Yamaha World and Yamaha Pitman Marine, for their enthusiasm and backing in the WaveDays which have been so successful over the last three years."
Yamaha is keen to again participate in the WaveDay series in 2003-2004, and is currently looking at a number of ways to make the current format even more enjoyable for participants.
"Next year we might try to incorporate a few activities that focus more on team participation," said Kypr.
"The WaveDays are already tremendously social events, and we want to make them even more so."
