The fun and excitement of the weekend's Queensland WaveDay did more than paste big cheesy grins on the faces of all its participants… it also seemed to break the Queensland drought! With Somerset Dam's water level substantially lower than at any of the previous years WaveDays, conditions looked anything but drought-affected, with drizzle, rain and light wind gusts all day long. But if you think that reduced the fun factor for the day's participants… think again. "It was a definitely a great WaveDay," said Yamaha's national Watercraft Manager Marty Kypr, "I was extremely impressed with not just the way the event was run, but the way everyone participated in really good spirits all the way through. "We had 35 craft, with all the categories supported quite well, the lower water level wasn't an issue at all, and everyone was just rearing to go." In choppy conditions, the quickest time of the day went to top-10 shootout winner Shannon Smith (GP1200R) with a 24.44 on the S1 course. Shannon also won the Runabout 2 category with a time of 25.72. The sub-800cc class went to Wayne Gerandts on his bright new yellow XLT800 with a 32.06, while Aaron Phillis (WB760) took out the Sport class with a time of 29.2. Fastest female rider was Lisa Adair on an XL1200R, with a time of 29.9 secs.

And proving the new WaveRunner FX140 is a great family craft with some serious get up and go, Lola Schrantz and her small passenger took out the Family class with a time of 32.2 on an FX140. Speaking of the FX, Yamaha's demonstrator FX copped another caning at the hands of interested demo pilots, the choppy conditions revealing the brilliance of the state-of-the-art FX hull design. Another interesting feature of the day was the opportunity for SE Queensland WaveRunner owners to meet and talk with Yamaha's special guest, Fukamachi-san, the head of International Sales and Marketing for WaveRunners, who was on hand to witness the fun and action of an Australian WaveDay. WaveRunner dealers represented on the day included Gold Coast WaveRunners, Brisbane's Custom Jet Skis as well as Maroochydore dealer North Coast Jet Skis. "It's great to see the dealers backing the series and promoting the fun and excitement of WaveRunners," said Kypr, "so we thank them for their support." The lucky door prize of 16 litres of Yamalube 2stroke Marine oil, (drawn by Fukamachi-san), went to competitor Shane Nunn.
